IFES in Ukraine presents research on EU election law and Ukraine’s commitments

On September 25, 2023, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) in Ukraine and the Verkhovna Rada Committee on the Organization of State Power, Local Self-Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning held a roundtable discussion entitled “Towards the European Union: Harmonization of Ukraine’s Electoral Legislation with EU Law”.

The roundtable provided an opportunity for lawmakers, civil society representatives and experts to exchange views on legislative changes needed to harmonize Ukraine’s electoral and political party legislation with EU law in this area.

During the event, IFES Ukraine presented the key findings of the recently published study “EU Electoral Law and Ukraine’s Obligations”.

This study compiles and describes in detail the various elements of the current EU legal framework in the field of elections and political parties, in order to inform Ukrainian authorities about the conditions of EU membership in these areas, as well as to predict possible future changes in Ukrainian legislation.

By initiating this important discussion, IFES Ukraine will collect recommendations and suggestions from key experts to complement the first draft of the research.
